A Place in His Heart

All Mary Langton wanted for her future was to marry a man she loved, not someone who would prove a suitable match for her or one handpicked by her father. Yet that is exactly was is facing her in the late 1600's if she cannot convince her father to reconsider his notion for her to marry Richard, a man she is completely disgusted with and one who still lives with his mother. Unfortunately her father will have the final word in what he simply believes is the best for Mary. With the loss of her mother, he kept Mary to himself while he spent time grieving her loss when he should have sent her to live with her sister Elizabeth to learn the skills needed by a woman to become a wife. Now all Mary seems to have a knack for is frustrating himself to no ends and for a love of numbers. She would rather wind up a spinster than to be handed off in an arranged marriage.

For Barnabas Horton, the loss of his wife three months ago is still becoming a challenge to raise two boys alone and run the bakery. He knows he must eventually move forward knowing that no one will ever compare with Ann. However with two boys needing a suitable caretaker and mother while he attends to the bakery, he finds himself drawn to Mary Langton, a girl from his childhood youth. Knowing that she was left at the altar and has been dealing with the embarrassment of finding no more suitors in the small hamlet of Mowsley, he believes he might have found the answer to both of their dilemmas. Now if he can only convince her father to give him an opportunity to court her before he considers a marriage to Robert. But will their opposing views of faith keep them apart?

I received A Place In His Heart by Rebecca DeMarino compliments of Revell Publishers and Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.. The author uses her own family history to set the stage for the background to this novel which she shares at the conclusion of this book. It conveys a time of religious persecution between the Anglican and Puritan churches and how Mary and Barnabas will contend with those issues. Barnabas believes he is marrying for the right reasons, but even though Mary's father tries to convince his that not enough time has passed to allow for that grieving to take place, he believes he is doing the right thing finding a mother for his boys. Mary, on the other hand, believes that she has fallen in love with Barnabas and that she is getting what she wanted, marrying for love, but it is something Barnabas keeps locked behind the walls of his heart. It is a wonderful story that compares what it means to have faith, hope and love in all things as the family decides to set sail for the New World. I rate this novel a 4.5 out of 5 stars.
