Still House Pond

The squeaky screen door slapped shut. Lilly Gray Corbett couldn't wait to start the day. Her skin tingled in the late spring's early morning chill. She could practically taste adventure waiting, urgent as an icicle against her tongue.

Lilly Gray Corbett loves living on Troublesome Creek, but she would much rather play with her best friend than watch her little brother and the twins. Her mama, Cooper, is often gone helping to birth babies, and Lilly has to stay home and help. When Aunt Alice sends a note inviting her to visit in the city, Lilly is excited to go.

Cooper isn't quite ready to let her young daughter travel all the way to Lexington by herself, but she reluctantly agrees to let Lilly go. When Cooper and her husband John hear news that Lilly's train crashed, they rush to find out if their daughter is injured or even alive. (excerpt back cover).

My Review:

In the book, Still House Pond by Jan Watson, we find ourselves in the following the book Sweetwater Run in the Troublesome Creek series of books. Having never read any of the books prior to this one, it was a story in itself that you can completely immerse yourself in and becoming lost in the lives of the characters.

Cooper is the local doctor of sorts who finds herself along with her friend Remy, delivering most of the towns babies as well as dealing with anything else that comes along including smallpox. Cooper has spent her years training alongside her husband Simone who was a doctor and has since passed away leaving the knowledge with Cooper to continue his work of taking care of the residents of Troublesome Creek.

Cooper also has hired Manda to help her when she is out delivering babies to care for her children Lilly, Jack and the twins Mazy and Molly and help out around the house. When Cooper is asked to care for Adie Stills, a neighbor who is highly contagious and pregnant, finds that her family is resentful for interfering in their business. They remain hostile towards Cooper even after she cares for his wife and their unborn child and keeping the remaining children safe from catching it. However when Adie dies during childbirth, the Still families anger is directed towards Cooper and her family in a most unusual way.

I received the book Still House Pond compliments of Tyndale House Publishers for my honest review and absolutely loved it. I read it in a few hours and could honestly say its a cross between Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman and Little House on the Prairie. I would rate this book a perfect 5 out of 5 stars. Now I can't wait to go back and read the previous books in the series.
